3 Things Needed Before an Abortion

If you find yourself facing an unexpected pregnancy, it can be an overwhelming and confusing time. It's important to consider all of your options, including abortion, but before you make any decisions, there are three essential steps you should take.

Step 1: Confirm your pregnancy

While confirming your pregnancy may seem like an obvious step, it's essential to ensure that you have accurate information before making any decisions.

Although home pregnancy tests are reliable, they can sometimes produce false positives. That’s why it’s ideal to confirm your pregnancy with a medical-grade test, which can be more accurate.

Also, keep in mind that you can take a pregnancy test as soon as one day after your missed period, so you don’t have to wait and wonder about a potential pregnancy.

Step 2: Receive an ultrasound scan

If a medical-grade pregnancy test confirms that you are indeed pregnant, the next step is receiving an ultrasound scan. This scan will provide critical information about your pregnancy and help determine what options are available to you.

First, the ultrasound will determine whether your pregnancy is viable or not. Miscarriages occur in 10-20% of pregnancies, so your pregnancy may have complications that will keep it from growing to term.

The scan will also ensure that you don’t have an ectopic pregnancy, which can occur when the pregnancy develops somewhere other than the uterus.

In the case of either a miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, you will need medical attention right away to protect your health.

The ultrasound also determines the age of your pregnancy, which will provide critical information in determining what options are available to you. For example, medical abortion is only approved by the FDA  in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Step 3: Get the facts and answers to your questions

Once you've confirmed your pregnancy and received information from your ultrasound scan, you'll probably have more questions and concerns. Getting the answers to those questions and understanding all the options available is important in helping you make the best decision for your health and future.
